I read once that time is like a river. At first it seems to flow slowly, all is new, the banks drift by and you have time to stare at them in wide-eyed wonder. As you travel downstream, it gains momentum, the current quickens, the landscape flashes by faster and faster and you barely have time to glance up. You are focused on navigation. Like anything, I think it's all about perspective. When you are four and a year is one-fourth of your entire existence, it's a really long time. But, every year it shortens. A sixteenth. A twenty-fifth. By the time a year is one thirty-sixth point five of your life, it doesn't seem like a long time at all.
November is National Novel Writing Month and National Blog Posting Month. I have things I want to do in my life that I keep putting off. I mention that I want to write a silly, sexy romance novel, but I don't. I delay. I procrastinate. I make excuses. I make dinner. We make babies. I go to preschool board meetings. I wallow in my busy, happy days. The only thing I don't make is progress on this dream. So, here I go. The goal of National Novel Writing Month is to write 50,000 words before midnight on November 30 without self flagellation, without doubt, without deleting or reworking. In other words, it can be as crappy as...it ends up being. The goal of National Blog Posting Month is to post every day for thirty days.
I'm going to try to meet both goals. In fact, I hope I've woven them together so tightly, here and in my mind, that I'll be too embarrassed, too shamed and too public to quit.
Garth Brooks says that a dream is like a river.
Don't you sit upon the shoreline and say you're satisfied
Choose to chance the rapids, dare to dance the tide.
Wish me luck, I'm a terrible sailor. I get sea sick on Ferris wheels.

Uh huh, I like cheesy country music. No. Rephrase. I LOVE cheesy country music. Mock me quickly, I'm closing my comments for most of the month of November because, for the love of God, I can't ask you to talk to me every freaking day for thirty days. That's cruel and usual punishment. Just visit maybe? Think about me once in a while? My email is always open - anymommyoutthere@gmail.com.
I may post my word count. Maybe every day. Maybe once a week. I don't know. We'll see whether there are any words to count first and how badly the count sucks.
The heroine is Emily. Her hero is Eddie. Send them travelers' mercies, they are in for a rough ride.
E&E Tally: One completed outline
Blog posts: 1/30
(I freaked out ten minutes after I posted this post and went to pull it, but Heather had already commented because she's awesome. It stays up, but I'm not sure about the posting every day in November thing. I might end up posting once a week, which is business as usual. I'm telling you that 50% of this post is most likely a lie. Don't trust me, I'm fickle.)

Oh good luck! Very ambitious of you, especially with the littlest one in your family. I was going to do NaNoWriMo, but I chickened out again this year. Excuses excuses I know.
I really do wish you luck and many, many words.
Thank you! I just went to pull this post down and then you commented. I'm honestly scared. To fail I think. Is that the whole point? It hurts a little.
Wow, very impressive goals. Just the act of striving is impressive, whatever you decide to do.
I'm doing NaBloPoMo again this year (somewhat halfheartedly, it snuck up on me) but NaNoWriMo is well beyond me. Good for you for daring to dream.
Good luck to you!!! I can't imagine doing both, as I did NaBloPoMo last year and it was really, incredibly challenging to do. But so rewarding and something I view as an accomplishment and a stepping stone to turning my blog into more than just a random place to drop complaints and thoughts. Maybe the NaNoWriMo works the same way, turning that dream into a reality can be nothing but a good thing, right? Write??
Hugs and thoughts are with you!!
I hope you do post more often. I always love reading your posts. Even if you don't post every day, we won't judge you. Besides, I need to do better at posting - and I don't have 4 little ones at home.
Speaking of which, funny how much can change in a year.
I planned on doing the NaBloPoMo thing... but then I realized that I follow a few bloggers that post Every. Single. Day. It's so hard to keep up. Then I realized it kinda annoys me when they post Every. Single. Day. So, I end up picking two titles that look interesting and mark the remainder as read. I'm sure I'd have a different perspective if I had more time to read and write blogs, but 50+ hour work weeks won't allow it.
Good luck though. I'm certainly not trying to steer you in a different direction. Just sitting here in fear of my Google Reader for the next 30 days. ;)
you can do it!!!
(My little baby is growing up.........xoxox )
I can't wait until you finish the book.
Who decided that NaBloPoMo should be in November? Seriously? Plan it for January or February when we're all stuck in the house and tired enough to let the TV rot the kids' brains while we post.
I've got my own trashy novel partly outlined in my head. I wish you fair winds, my friend!
And I want an autographed copy.
I think you should kill to birds with one stone; write your novel here. :)
Don't be afraid! This is awesome of you. Go for your dream. Your dream that is outside of motherhood. Best of luck!
Good luck to you!
I can't imagine how much work it would be to post every day, on top of creating a novel...but if it happens, I'll read every entry!
Oh, and I used to think Garth Brooks was sexy! Just writing that makes me feel so old!
Go Stacey! I'm hoping to make it through Nablopomo. I can't imagine attempting both. I'll be cheering for you.
Fickle, or wishful thinking? Either way, I wish you luck. I always love when you post.
Well of course you can do it. And I love that you think you've been blowing it off. You have FOUR babies. Silly girl. But a novel? No problem. I bet you can whip that out before Thanksgiving.
Can't wait to read it.
Fantastic! Just please tell me that Emily and Eddie will make it, because I just can't take the suspense!
xo
I wish you luck!! A couple months ago, a lady who heads the NaNoWriMo locally was in the bookstore and I chatted with her while helping her find a book, telling her I wanted to do this one day, but I feel hopelessly bereft of ideas, but her enthusiasm was close to contagious. I still feel bereft, though!
Wow, good luck! I can barely even push out a blog post these days and everyone is writing novels..
Now I have Garth Brooks stuck in my head.
Good for you.
I'm so glad you left it up. I didn't know about either of these events this month, and now I'm tempted to join one or the other, or both, myself.
Good luck with your novel - I'm sure you'll enjoy this challenge more than you think you will!
And is it too much to hope that we'll get to see a snippet of your work here?!
I'm doing nanowrimo too! Except I am soooo not coherent enough to write an entire novel. It's only day 2 and already what I write makes no sense. haha. oy vey.
Do what you can, if you miss some of it because you're busy living life, then I think it's a fair trade!
However you end up doing it - 30 posts or 4 - you can count on people coming by, we love you!
Full support for the fiction writing. I hope you share some (or all) of their journey. I love fun romance novels! You can do it!
I send you good thoughts for a safe literary journey and I would actually LOVE to read a silly, sexy novel, so count me in as a future customer!
Good luck, hon! I'll miss reading your posts, but I know that you'll benefit from writing for yourself first! Call me sometime, ok?!?
I contemplated joining you for the 30-day thing for about 2.5 seconds then realized I don't need anymore stress or pressure in my life. I will check in and read what you have to say though! :)
And it National Adoption Month too!!! Busy month.
I thought about doing both... you are far braver than I! I can't wait to see how it turns out :)
Good luck!
i will buy your 50,000 words. and i will love every single one.
I don't think I could write 30 posts this month. But I'm excited to read yours. And the novel, whenever that gets published :)
Oh lordy...on two counts:
One - Cheesy country music? I was right there with you about 15 years ago. Now I'd MUCH rather rock out with my Green Day.
Two - A post every day?!?! You are a much more ambitious lady than I am. Good luck! I'll be reading....
I'm glad Heather stopped you from taking this down. I'm excited to see what you'll come up with. Good luck!
I write for a country music blog, though we typically make fun of the cheesy country songs.:)
I wish I was as brave as you. I WANT to write, I WANT to post - so much bottled up inside, but there just isn't time. Just none. I hope to have some in January. That's the plan, anyway.
Good luck! I can't wait to see what you come up with.
i am looking forward to reading, and reading, and reading!
Don't do both -- that's insane and is insane even without your schedule. Unless you're posting what you're writing for your novel, of course ;) I'd totally read it as I decided I like reading snarky humorous romances (Karin Hawkins, Lani Diane Rich, etc) and I have a feeling that would just be how you'd roll.
I have only read your blog a short time but I am already hooked! I can only imagine how good your book will be! Please write it-- you will be fantastic (You already are!)
Great, now I have to come up with different names for MY silly romance novel characters.
All I can say is thank goodness they don't have national sewer's month because I'd likely sign up for that in like, a weak moment of enthusiasm :-) You are going to have tons of fun. Motivation breeds motivation. Can't wait to hear more.
You've inspired me! I'd been contemplating doing both as well, and this was just the nudge that I needed.
Best of luck to you on this wild ride! I look forward to hearing more about the adventures of Emily & Eddie.
I committed to NaBloMoPo, but I commend you for the 50,000 words, I can't wait for a glimpse.
And btw, it's so hard to believe it was a year ago, the packing, the pregnancy. Where does the time go? Wow.
Good luck! You can do it. I wanted to do it...but I too chickened out. National Blog Post Writing Month I can do, though.
Write that romance novel. It'll be awesome.
Good Luck! And also, I am so thrilled that every day for a month I will get my Any Mommy blog fix, better than chai!
Good luck. I love reading your writing and know that you will do great writing every day. Can't wait!
HA, I am commenting. Oh wait, so did 40 other people. What? I just opened my reader for the first time this week.
I love that you quoted Garth Brooks. I *may* know all the words to that song.
