Wedding Bells

My baby sister is getting married on June 14. It's exciting. She's in love, he's wonderful, happily ever after, blah, blah, blah.... Now, let's bring it back to me, please. How does this affect me? (Besides the trip across the country trapped in a plastic tube with three small Tasmanian devils.)

Um, shopping. FOR MY BABIES. For outfits that I would never, ever in a million diapers waste money on normally because they will undoubtedly be ruined within a millisecond of donning. Outfits my husband would forbid me to buy under ordinary circumstances (and if you're wondering if I am forbidden to do things often, with my mouth? No. We usually agree on stupidly wasteful extravagances like fancy clothes for Tasmanian devils. Petting and coveting is allowed. Purchasing, discouraged.)

In this case, I have the trump card.
Sweetheart, it's my baby sister. It's her wedding. If we play this right, and they are cute enough, she might produce cousins someday. We have to represent. We have to dress them up like the little dolls that they are not and drug them so that they sit politely in pews throughout the wedding ceremony.

Aha, ha, ha. No.

My sister has already been disabused of the notion that my three toddlers would be anything close to approaching angelic quiet accessories at her nuptials. The conversation went something like this.

Me: I think it would be better if they skipped the ceremony. I was thinking of hiring a nanny for the whole day.

Her: I know it might be hard for them to sit and be quiet, but I really want them in the pictures.

Me: If by hard, you mean categorically impossible. Yes. If by quiet, you mean having this as the soundtrack for your wedding vows, "Momma?! Why you up there? MOMMA? What you do? What you do Aunt Dee? WHAT YOU DO? I pretty. My new dress pretty. Mine hair pretty. Momma pretty. YOU PRETTY MOMMA? I NO WANT JACKET. Where is cake?" Then, yes. If by pictures you mean trying, endless ordeal where no one smiles, everyone cries and your stunning, designer wedding gown is ruined before you reach your reception. Sure.

Her: I'll ask about a nanny service.

Me: Wise.

They are going to attend the rehearsal dinner in these adorable outfits. I have so far exceeded my budget for said outfits that they will be barefoot because I cannot afford shoes.

I KNOW. Aren't they just decadent butter cream frosting edible?? Ess is wearing MiniBoden. Gee sports a combination look from BabyGap and Gymboree. Cue is dressed in Old Navy Couture. The line for modeling contracts forms here.

I took my 2 year old and my 6 month old to my bro-in-laws wedding 2 weekends ago. We tried to find a sitter, we had one until the day of the wedding when they backed out (my DH was Best Man, no help there). So I had no choice but to bring them. I told everyone I was drugging them. They laughed until we were actually at the wedding and they slept through the whole thing. They realized I wasn't joking. They looked at me like I was the worst mom imaginable. But to me it was either that or I wasn't going.

Nothing wrong with incouraging sleep...nothing at all. Done it before myself.

They are adorable! Very worth the money. Who needs shoes...not me!

They look adorable! Chris' brother is getting married in June also. Both of my kids are in the wedding, which I'm only medium nervous about. I should email you a picture of them in their wedding finery. I think miniature suits are just about the cutest thing ever invented! I hope you guys have a great time at the wedding!

When I got married, my husband's niece was at the wedding. I hired a 12 year old girl to "babysit" at the wedding my niece.

I also had a special gift bag, with crayons, paper, a couple of books and a few pieces of candy to entertain her throughout the day.

Maybe that would work for you? Then you could enjoy the day, still be able to see your children and everyone could still relax.

Funny post - and the clothes are adorable. That little blazer is cracking me up.

Truly? Shoes could spoil those outfits. They look perfect just as they are :-)

I am considering sleep aid for the cross-country flight?! And, we did end up hiring a sitter for the wedding day. As a result, I am REALLY looking forward to it.

Truda - I would love to see that picture.

I do think shoes are overrated. Their little bare feet are so cute.

I found your blog today from allmediocre, and I love your kids pics. I am adopting too...an infant...you are brave to adopt older children. Best of luck.

They are adorable and I think the shoes will just ruin it...lol

I can completely understand the whole kids and ruined dress thing. My oldest was 5 months old when his dad and I got married. While they were taking pictured of his father and his side of the family I was holding R on my lap and that's when he decided to spit up on my wedding dress. Did ya know spit up turns ivory satin weird colors?

I can't wait to see them in person! They look adorable. I can't believe that it is coming up in two short weeks.

Awww! So cute! The jacket is by far the best part. How much chocolate was involved in the taking of these pictures? And can it be used again to get the jacket back ON him for the RD?
Cue will fit right in with the Virginia crowd and Ess is stunning in pink polka dots. Good thing they won't be there the next day to show me up ;-)

Adorable! I'm going to host a telethon to get these kids some shoes.

Post was terrific.

Jess - That's exactly what I fear - spit up and greasy fingers all over her wedding dress. At least it was your own baby.

I am having so much fun with comments about their cute selves, I can't even imagine how much fun I'll have on the real day. If I can just get them in the door relatively clean!

Amy - telethon, love it. Although don't worry, their grandma is on it.

Your Tasmanian devils are super cute, especially the little girl. Oh wait, your boys are oh so precious too!

I was in my best friend's wedding when 37 weeks preggo with #2. My then 2.5 yr old daughter was the flower girl. I thought I was going to have to bungee cord her body to a chiar during the ceremony. While the happy couple were saying their vows, my daughter thought that was the perfect time to climb onto the altar (when the couple were standing) and jump off of it. repeat over and over. I wanted to die. Luckily, my friend is so good natured. She says that she didn't even notice the little monkey jumping.

Adorable! and you know I was so sure that my girls were going to be loud and disruptive at my cousin's wedding last year, so I sat WAY in the back so I could run out in case of some tantrums. But they suprised the crap out of me and were super quiet, they loved the whole thing! maybe it's because they're girls, I think the dresses really caught their eye. so, you never know your kids could suprise you

Lisa, your friend is sweet, but you are pretty amazing for agreeing to be a bridesmaid in your final weeks!

Casey - hope springs eternal.
