Spring has Sprung. Finally. Summer, even, with a high of ninety degrees today. At first, Cue took offense to this horrid, too-shiny-in-his-eyes thing we call the SUN. After a while, he got into the spirit of things with a little summer siesta.
Still Missing, One Slightly Undersized Brain. This afternoon I gave Ess and Gee a bath. I wanted to cut the elastics out of Ess' hair so that I could wash it and discovered that I had left my little scissors downstairs. So, I left them getting undressed in the bathroom (dangerous on so many levels) and sprinted downstairs to grab the scissors off of the mantel. I returned in seconds to find them still happily removing their socks. When I went to cut the elastics, I was holding the TV remote?! Where did I leave my brain again? Oh yeah, Costco.
Beautiful Hair. While on the subject of Ess' hair, it is an adventure, but I improve every time I do a style. I have read a lot about how important hair is in Haitian (and African-American) culture. It is very important to me that I learn to do her hair and that she feels that I understand how to care for it. I also want her to LOVE her hair and know how beautiful it is. That's why I cried when I read her 'interview' from toddler school with Teacher Glinda. The last question was 'something special about me is?' Her answer? 'I have beautiful hair.' Now, if only she will feel that way when she is sixteen.
And now, here it is, the promised extremely official, very scientific experiment.
Boy Sperm Like Breakfast. Our fine local paper (my small, diaper-filled kingdom for the Washington Post or NY Times) reported on a study that has been on my mind. Research indicates that women who eat breakfast, and more specifically breakfast cereal, statistically have more boys. And conversely, women who don't eat breakfast cereal are statistically more likely to have girls (there still being, last I checked, only those two options).
I found the article fascinating because I could easily apply it to me. (As opposed to things that are less fascinating in that they have nothing to do with me. Kidding, sheesh). I eat cereal for breakfast like it's a religious edict. Every single morning. Cereal (either honey nut cheerios or honey bunches of oats). Milk. Day begins. And, I have borne....two boys. Viola! My mother? She thinks cereal floating in milk is cruel and unusual punishment banned by the Geneva convention. I have two sisters. Study confirmed.
What? You find this anecdotal? You want more evidence? Cool, because I was thinking it would be fun to run my own little scientific research project right here. How about it? I need volunteers. Tell me, about your cereal/sex experience. (That's cereal as in food eaten in the morning, not serial as in a lot of times in a row, although the latter would be more fun, perhaps). Boys or girls, breakfast cereal or no? Anyone abhor breakfast cereal and have five boys? Adore breakfast and have girls? If you have a mix (of children, not cereals), did your breakfast eating habits change at all between them?
Once you have reported your results to me, I shall do math (yes, that is frightening, but I will run my math by my clever husband and see if it is correct) and ascertain if our numbers confirm or rebut their 56% boys for cereal eaters hypothesis. The more data, the better, so ask your friends about their breakfast habits prior to conception. Or better yet, if they live in a cool place, get them to come and post it themselves so I can have their dot.
Wait, what's that? Not scientific, too many variables...no control group... you're breaking up, sorry.

My boys love cereal and I do too!!!
Love your new theme and I'm jealous of all your dots on the map.
Happy Sunday.
I almost always eat cereal for breakfast and I've had a girl and a boy.
Love the blog. I read it all the time!!
Love,
Truda
What an interesting study, very strange.
And I will have to prove the study wrong because I am not a cereal eater, or I wasn't, I should say, and I have a boy and a girl.
I did, however, eat a lot of pop tarts.
And my fave cereal is Honey Nut Cheerios. YUM.
I heart breakfast. Any kind of breakfast. I'll eat cereal all day long.
Result: Boy.
i'm here from beth's link....hilarious study! =)
i'm not a breakfast cereal gal. i have 3 girls. =) i do love cereal around 10 pm sometimes, though. does that matter?!
K, I have a mix of children and I don't think my cereal box cereal eating changed.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.
I have a boy, and I rarely eat breakfast. I do eat breakfast for dinner.
I had two boys and two girls and when I do remember to eat breakfast, it's rarely cereal.
oh fun!
i eat cereal sometimes. mostly cheerios. but mostly at night. for breakfast i usually have bacon, eggs and biscuits.
now when i had my first girl i was probably grabbing a granola bar or a waffle because i was working.
2nd girl: real breakfast
#3 was a boy and i was probably eating real breakfast then too. was home and not working.
i think my results are invalid.
I love cereal, but I eat maybe three bowls of it a month.
Baby count: 2 girls.
My breakfast of choice: cereal. Loved it as a bedtime snack during both pgs. Results: one girl; one boy.
Love cereal (to my hubby's disgust) and we have 3 boys!
I saw that article, too, btw. Very fasinatingly strange. Now, did it just mention cereal, or was it sugary breakfasts in general?
Very interesting.....
When I got preggo with the first, I was hardly eating cereal at all, more like bagels or oatmeal. I had a girl.
Witht he second and the third child, I ate cereal ALL the time, breakfast and sometimes right before bed. Yep- BOTH BOYS!!!!!
Hmmm. Found you from Beth. Anyhoo... it didn't work for me. Not a breakfast cereal girl and I have 2 boys, 1 girl. Another proposal: I've heard it said that it can be about how often you, um, do the deed. Boys are for the randier times and girls are from the, uh, dry spells. The theory is that the girl sperm is heartier. And *blushing* it totally applies in my case.
Very pretty new blog design!
And for the record, I have 3 boys and would religiously eat cereal every morning - especially sugary cereal, but sometimes without the milk.
I'm here from Beth's link. I eat Cheerios every single day. I have one boy. :)
I love, love, love cereal and I have 4 sons, no daughters.
Beth sent me.
Siobhan, I have a sister 'nlaw named Siobhan. She has four daughters - no sons! Maybe there is a name connection there, for number of children?!
BTW, I love that name.
I don't usually eat breakfast. I od like cereal, but would more likely eat it at night and not very often. I have THREE boys. And just found out we are having a girl. To be honest I probably ate more cereal for breakfast before conceiving her... (I like shredded wheat with sliced banana or Cinnamon Life if you want specifics! Oh, and only with rice milk.)
Steph
I never ate cearel when I was pregnant with Boo, and had a girl. My hubby's ex wife said she always ate cereal with Hunter, and got the boy. Couldn't eat ceareal with her other two (yucky morning sickness) and had two girls. Confirmed!
I'm a perfect example. I ADORE cereal of any kind and must eat eat every night - sometimes for snacktime, and most of the time in the mornings...AND, I have two boys - no girls..
So there you go.
Ashley S.
I have a boy, and I ate whatever would stay down.
Interesting study, but the sperm determines the gender, so wouldn't it stand to reason that what Mom eats is unimportant? Did the study say anything about Dad's breakfast choice? Cause if it did, I now know who to blame...
My husband has been known to say I live on cereal. Especially when I was pregnant... I'd have like 4 bowls a day.
I've had both a girl and a boy. :)
Started married life with cereal everyday - boy
After he was born I switched to granola bars (mostly...sometimes cereal) - girl
Look forward to the results
I never used to eat cereal for breakfast. Never, never, never. And, I have 2 little girls.
I do eat cereal now, b/c I enjoy eating breakfast with them. They are big cereal eaters - think that means I have grandsons in the (very, very, very far-off) future?
Jess
I NEVER eat cereal for breakfast and I have two boys and a girl in between.
Wow! My little corner of the universe is so busy this morning. Thanks Beth! And thanks for coming by and giving me your cereal data. Awesome. I'll do math tonight, so stay tuned.
i alternate. sometimes i love cereal, sometimes i have to have something else. my kids are boy, girl, girl, boy and boy. (with my oldest girl, i had to have a bacon and cheese omelet every morning)
Came over from Beth's place. Great blog.
I LOVE breakfast cereal and have one child...a BOY.
Never, ever ate breakfast. Result? Girl
Doesn't the man decide what sex the baby is? Shouldn't it be whether he eats cereal or not? Just curious.
I enjoy a good bowl of cereal about 5 days a week and yes, I have 2 boys. Go fig.
First visit to your blog, via Beth. I shall be back to visit again!
My mother-in-law has 5 boys and eats cereal for breakfast. I have two girls and one boy and I always eat breakfast, but not always cereal.
Love,
Jenny C.
I have eaten cereal for breakfast my ENTIRE life, and I have one boy and two girls (though the two would have been one--they're identical twins).
love the new look!
I will definitely be there at the pansy table in June. Had to explain to Ken why we do, in fact, need to have a seating chart at our wedding... so the pansy tradition can continue. :)
No babies here, so can't weigh in on that one.
I have two boys. I'm not big on breakfast. Go figure.
That picture is so cute! Little baby foot!
Hate cereal and love my three girls!
Hate cereal and love my three girls!
Never have eaten cereal and I have a boy and a girl. :)
not a big cereal or breakfast eater in general and I am pregnant with my first child and she is a girl. So I would have to say it is true in our case. Or it could have just been the timing of things (you know what I mean? wink? wink?) I am glad that I found your blog!!!! I was thiking about yu the other day as I drove passed your home. Sorry that I seemed to have dropped off the face of the planet.
Sorry, I do not like (and never have) cereal, and actually I skip breakfast (and I know how bad that is, LOL). Oh, and I have 3 boys:)
