Hart for Haiti

The Hart for Haiti preschool dance and art sale to benefit God's Littlest Angels orphanage in Haiti will be held on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at Kid Sports from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. A $5.00 donation per child is requested. All proceeds from this event will be given to God's Littlest Angels.

A little background.

Our daughter, Saige, was born in Haiti and lived in God's Littlest Angels orphanage outside of Petionville for the first year of her life. I struggled all week after the devastating earthquake with what to say to Saige. How much to tell her? Any mention of recent events in Haiti requires so much explanation, so many words that I’m not sure my four year old daughter needs to hear.

We donated as a family, but it didn't feel like enough. When Saige is older, what we did this week, how we helped, how much she participated, might be really important to her. It might help her feel more connected, less adrift, if we document the concrete steps we took as a family to help. It might help her process her grief if we learn someday that she lost her birth mother this week.

Telling my kids that an earthquake happened in Haiti (like a volcano, momma?) was easier than I imagined. They know that a lot of buildings fell and people have to sleep outside and that the kids at God’s Littlest Angels need food and water (and cookies, do they need cookies?) and that the grown ups who run the orphanage need medicine and supplies to help all the people in their area who are hurt and hungry.

They are ready to dance and jump and paint for Haiti. What about your kids? Would they like to join us?

I have fliers. I have information. We need your preschoolers and toddlers to create masterpieces for our sale. We need you and your kids to come to Kid Sports on February 2, 2010 from 10-2 and dance and jump and eat cookies for GLA and Haiti. We need their grandparents and friends to come and buy a beautiful piece of art made with love to benefit the children in Haiti.
